I am tinkering with some JS to that will auto post a variable from an URL to a form, the aim being to auto apply a voucher on link click.

I’ve hosted it on github.com/Iheff/jQueryLink2FormSumbit. (there is a test page.)

I think I need to speak with the ASP guys it appears that the __doPostBack() function is working hand in hand with the ASP code. once I get some clues on how this works I can finish her up.

IE7 voodoo

"IE"... Sometimes it just needs a bit voodoo to back it up.

Tonight I was helping my girlfriend, Web designer, (portsmouth based) overcome some IE issues, for a site she made for a family friend.

1 problem, A list of tags that cut short for ie7 users, and 2 that her slider was overflowing to the left and to the far ends of nowhere.

Anyway these only took a few minutes to solve, but showed some interesting buggy behaviour and led to a standard issue “let’s start playing with it till it breaks harder – or we fix it.”

I thought it might be happy to share my approach to finding out why IE is trying to destroy your day.

Checkpoints to hit:

  • IE is easy to confuse, so always enforce your element types defaults.
  • IE is stupid so sometimes needs to be forced to treat an object in a certain way, {zoom:1} will enforce it “hasLayout” which will help it to keep its defined width when you have complicated stuff inside, (floats, position:relatives/absolutes etc)
  • IE is nasty, So be nasty back. Don’t be afraid to bust a css-hack on it’s a$$.
  • IE is oldskool! – try not pad elements, Ie uses that other box modeling method and writing !important all over your css is nasty workaround really. Never use width and padding together on an element to avoid width troubles.
  • IE is buggy!, so when all else fails start to experiment… {positon:?; overflow:?; zoom:?; z-index:?; height:?; display:?; float:?!important; }

Windows 8 splash

A quick posting on Win8

(Some intersting points giving Credit where its due, design wise its a pertty thing.)

So if you havent already been keeping in the loop about Billywares shiney new OS, Here is your chance.

Designed for operating systems with displays between 7 – 70 inches wide this means from little tablets to mega-screen we can only dream of actualy p0wning.

All in all, I think its the first time theve actually earned their money, this is a truley well though out OS based on the users experience. it caters for moused environments in the same capacity as touch screen, so whatever devices you plan on adorning yourself with you keep the same tidy OS rolling on each of them all nice and in-sync link.

I haven’t anything to install a Dev OS to, so alas, I havent sampled the delights yet, but I’m keen to get my hands on a version and see how it kills applications – or not, as the case would hopefully be.

Whatever happens with it, it’s a great step in bringing the desktop and the web closer, and should open up some interesting doors for web devs.

Doesn’t look good for the IT boys at your work, they are gonna hate it. I would imagine it will take a year for them to start pushing this out.

Ill throw some more links in this soon.

So, today I started work on my new blog. How do you like it so far?… A little minimal – I know.

I hope to be adding some handy features soon, and playing with some of the proportions of this grid system. (slim but not overly flexible)

Once I’ve snapped up and tuned all the WP-Plugins I need and can tweak them to my needs I’ll be slimming it down to a nice little package, or possibly see if can use the apache mod to do this for me. the ultimate dev tool for me would be auto-minifying and combining JS and CSS, If I can do this it can save me a lot of hassle in the future, I have used a WP tool for this before but it requires constant maintenance and just turns into chore to babysit.

Design wise I would still like to add some dynamic to it, I love the minimal feel, and think I have hinted towards a bit of character with the typeface but feel some movement or “something” could go well to give the site a bit more charcter at the moment its a little soulless.

I’ll post my alternative design
